Apr 15, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s national carrier has delayed flights to the UK, Germany and France due to the skies over northern Europe being turned into a no-fly zone.
A SriLankan Airlines spokesperson has said the departure of two SriLankan flights to Germany and Paris from Colombo scheduled for tomorrow (16) morning have been delayed due to huge clouds of ash from a volcanic eruption in Iceland today which turned the Northern European skies into a no-fly zone.
Many airports in Europe were closed and flights were grounded on Thursday (15) because of ash from a volcanic eruption in Iceland, airport authorities have said.
French officials shut down all flights to Paris and 23 other airports, Asssociatd Press reported.
Ash from Iceland has prompted aviation officials to restrict flights over parts of Norway and the UK.
The ash also caused delays in some flights leaving the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
"There are some ground holds in place for flights that would be going through Icelandic air space due to volcanic ash," FAA spokeswoman Laura Brown said on Wednesday (14) night.
It is not known yet when the suspended flights will resume, aviation authorities in Europe said.
