Apr 13, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Marxist JVP says that the governing party, despite getting a majority at the general election, has been rejected by a majority of the people in the country.
JVP politburo member Anura Kumara Dissanayake told the media yesterday (12) that instead of boasting of the victory, the government should commence providing relief to the people.
He said only some four million out of a 14 million registered voters had voted for the government while there were a large number of eligible voters whose names had been removed from the electoral lists.
Dissanayake said the government has received an opportunity to provide relief to the people, but throughout history governments that received a majority had not used it to provide relief to the people.
He noted that the Mahinda Rajapaksa government should first strengthen the country's economy.
"Their priority should be to build the economy and provide relief to the people. The employees of the state and private sectors should get salary increases. Unemployed graduates should find employment and prices of essential commodities should be reduced. We believe that the government does not have such a programme," he said.
