Apr 12, Colombo: A Sri Lankan Court has ordered several members of the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) led by former Army Commander Retired General Sarath Fonseka, to appear before the Fort Police in Colombo in order to make a statement on violating election laws.
The Colombo Fort Magistrate has ordered DNA members Vijitha Herath, Sunil Hadunnetti, Arjuna Ranatunga, Lakshman Nipunarachchi and General Fonseka's wife, Anoma Fonseka, to appear before the Fort Police.
The Fort Police had filed a report before Colombo Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratna stating that the DNA had held a public meeting at the Fort railway station 48 hours before the date of the general election in violation of election laws and regulations.
The public meeting had been held to call for the immediate release of General Fonseka from military custody.
According to the police, former parliamentarians Vijitha Herath, Sunil Hadunnetti, Arjuna Ranatunga, Lakshman Nipunaarachchi and Ven. Thalawelle Chandraloka Thero and Anoma Fonseka had held the meeting at the Fort Railway Station on April 6.
The police had alleged that the DNA activists had committed an offence under Section 70 of the Parliament Election Act No 1 of 1981.
The Magistrate has now ordered the police to issue notice on DNA activists to make a statement before the Fort Police and the matter is to be taken up on April 23.
