Sri Lanka court remands UNP PC member and 4 others over attack on opposition MP

Apr 11, Chilaw: The Chilaw Magistrate Court today remanded a UNP provincial council member and four others for the intra-party attack on newly elected opposition parliamentarian Palitha Range Bandara.
The court remanded the suspects till April 23 pending further investigations. They have been arrested on Saturday (10) over the assault on the MP and two others including a police officer. A T56 weapon taken from the police officer by the attackers had been recovered later.
Range Bandara had undergone surgery at the Colombo National Hospital last night and is currently recovering in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital. The doctors say he is out of danger now and recovering.
A team headed by Chilaw Assistant Superintendent of Police is to conduct investigations, police spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakody said.
Meanwhile the wife of the assaulted parliamentarian had told the Daily Mirror online that the President Mahinda Rajapaksa had inquired into the incident and the well-being of her husband and assured maximum medical attention to the MP.
