Sri Lanka opposition leader claims government does not have clear majority
Sat, Apr 10, 2010, 06:50 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.
Apr 10, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremasinghe told the media today (10) that although the government was elected it had no clear mandate as most of the people had decided to avoid casting their votes.
He explained that approximately 80 % of the registered voters generally cast their votes at parliamentary polls, while this time it was only 56 %, despite there being peace in the country with the end of the war last year.
Wickremasinghe said that while 2.6 million people who would have cast their votes have refrained from voting, 3.1 million have voted against the government.
He said the main function of the opposition under the current scenario is to ensure democracy to the citizens and the campaign for that would not be restricted to parliament.
He said the party would reorganize itself and launch a campaign to create awareness amongst the people and to mobilize them.
Wickremasinghe also said that he will not step down as the party leader despite the UNP losing the recent general elections.
He attributed the UNP's defeat to the people's lack of faith in the current system. He said he will step down only when he has to.
