Sri Lanka Police Chief urges public to celebrate peacefully

Apr 10, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Inspector General of Police Mahinda Balasuriya yesterday requested the masses including the candidates and their supporters to celebrate the election victory peacefully without violence.
The processions and meetings are not allowed until the April 15th, seven days after the elections, the police chief said. He appealed to the public to uphold the law.
The police chief, whose department had deployed over 59,000 personnel to maintain law and order before and during the Thursday's polls, expressed his appreciations to all the police personnel including the Senior DIG (Elections) Gamini Navaratne, election officials including the Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dishanayake, the armed forces and the STF, candidates, and the public for supporting the police to ensure a free and fair election.
The IGP said no major incidents were reported during the election day and the police only received 11 complaints.
The police however, arrested 15 persons in Nawalapitiya polling division for violating election laws.
The poll monitoring group Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) however said at the close of polls at 4pm, they recorded 84 Major and 202 Minor incidents of election related violence.
