* Sri Lankans vote out key ministers and MPs at general election, Marxist party loses big

Apr 10, Colombo: Sri Lankan voters have voted out several former ministers including Foreign Affairs Minister Rohitha Bogollagama and Justice Minister Milinda Moragoda and former parliamentarians at Thursday's general election.

Bogollagama and Moragoda, the two most notable ministers of the UPFA government have lost their seats from the Colombo District while Ministers Amir Ali from the Batticaloa district and Ferial Ashraff from Digamadulla district have also failed to secure their slots in the preferential votes' lists.

Ministers Mahinda Rathnatileka and Jayatissa Ranaweera have lost their seats in the Ratnapura district, while UNP defector Minister Mano Wijeratne has failed to make it to the Kegalle district list.

In the main opposition United National Party, former parliamentarians Vajira Abeywardena and Ranjith Aluvihare, the party's district leaders for Galle and Matale, have failed to make it to the next parliament.

UNP Matara district legislator Sagala Ratnayake and Badulla district leader Ravi Samaraweera have also been unsuccessful in re-entering parliament.

Marxist JVP parliamentarian Nihal Galapppatti who represented the party in Parliament since 1994, has not been re-elected in the Hambantota district.

However, the JVP that secured 39 seats in the 2004 general election contested the election under Democratic National Front (DNA) managed to return only five members to parliament. For the Anuradhapura district former JVP parliamentarian K. D. Lalkantha fell short of just 190 votes to be re-elected.

JVP defectors, the NFF led by Wimal Weerawansa fielded 16 candidates for the election on the UPFA ticket. However, the NFF has not been able to get 14 of its members elected to parliament. Only Weerawansa and Weerakumara Dissanayake who contested from the Anuradhapura district have been elected.
