Apr 09, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party is considering the reorganization of the party after its defeat at the country's parliamentary election held yesterday.
UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told media today that the party needs to review the election results when released completely and the party's strategy and the organization structure will have to be changed accordingly.
The UNP under the leadership of Ranil Wickremasinghe has managed to secure only 47 seats in the 225-member legislature.
The election results are not complete yet as the results from the Kandy and Trincomalee districts have not been released due to the election law violations occurred at some polling canters in those districts.
The party had suffered a set back at the polls and will now have to undergo a number of changes, Attanayake said without specifying what the changes are.
The UNP has failed to secure a victory in any of the polls, provincial or general, held within the last 9 years.
The party had been plagued with internal disputes over the leadership of its present leader Ranil Wickremasinghe.
