Sri Lanka police arrest 15 persons involved in Election Day incidents

Apr 08, Nawalapitiya: Sri Lanka Police have arrested 15 persons in connection with election related incidents in the Nawalapitiya are in the Kandy District.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mahinda Balasuriya has said that impartial investigations would be carried out on the allegations leveled against the suspects.
The IGP told the media that the police have so far received 11 complaints of election related violence today (08). He also noted that the current checkpoints are to remain intact and the three armed forces have been deployed to provide security to the counting centers.
According to the police, political rallies have also been banned for a period of one week after the elections. The election laws are applicable until the 15th of April, the police said.
Earlier in the evening, election monitors met the Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dishanayake to discuss a spate of incidents occurred in Nawalapitiya in order to decide the course of action to be taken.
The incidents recorded from Nawalapitiya included vote rigging, threatening opposition polling agents, chasing away voters, illegal propaganda and several clashes.
