* Sri Lanka says Australia may become a "breeding ground" for Eelam rebels
Thu, Apr 8, 2010, 12:41 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 08, Colombo: Sri Lanka has said that the Tamil asylum-seekers could turn Australia in to breeding ground for Tamil separatism if Australia continues to allow them into the country.

Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama told Australia's ABC News that the Tamil asylum-seekers have no need to leave Sri Lanka now and they could turn Australia into a breeding ground for separatism if Australia provides passage to them.

"Therefore we should discourage, and I call on the Australian Government not to recognize, the asylum-seekers under any circumstances from Sri Lanka," he told the ABC news South Asia correspondent Sally Sara yesterday.

Political analysts say the Tamil asylum-seekers from Sri Lanka prefer to seek asylum in Australia instead of going to neighbouring Tamil Nadu due to Australia's sympathetic towards them.

They say there is minimal evidence to support claims by the asylum-seekers that there is widespread or institutionalized persecution in Sri Lanka and as the conditions are improving in the country, the Australian government should exercise caution and assess the validity of those claims.
