Apr 07, Colombo: Sri Lanka Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mahinda Balasuriya has said that severe action would be taken against miscreants at polling stations and counting centers during the general election.
Balasuriya during a media briefing yesterday (6) informed that the three armed forces and the Police Special Task Force (STF) would assist the police.
The Elections Commissioner has instructed the police to tighten security at places considered as hot spots for election related incidents and additional security personnel at each police station to assist the police in dealing with any untoward situations.
"The Police Department has taken all necessary steps to ensure a free and fair election. We request the public to cast their votes and return to their homes in order to make sure of a violence-free post elections period," he said.
The IGP said the police have requested counting agents not to bring mobile phones into counting stations.
According to Balasuriya, there has been less election related violence during the general election period than during the presidential election period.
