Apr 07, Colombo: Leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Rauff Hakeem told Parliament yesterday (6) that Sri Lanka Army personnel should be deployed in the Nawalapitiya electorate in the Kandy District to control the rising level of election violence in the area.
He said that a powerful politician from the governing United People's Freedom Alliance was preventing opposition party candidates and their supporters from campaigning in Nawalapitiya.
"We cannot rely on the Nawalapitiya Police as the Officer-In-Charge of the station is a stooge of this UPFA candidate," Hakeem said.
The Muslim legislator alleged that the respective OIC had gone to the extent of pasting UPFA election posters on the vehicles belonging to Hakeem's supporters.
Hakeem charged that the police officer had even asked his supporters why they campaigned in Nawalapitiya when the area belonged to the said deputy minister of the government.
