Construction of Matara-Kataragama railway line in Southern Sri Lanka begins

Apr 06, Colombo: Sri Lanka government has commenced the construction of the first phase of proposed Matara-Kataragama railway line, the segment from Matara to Beliatta.
According to the Sri Lanka Railways Department, a contract has been signed recently with a Chinese company to extend the 30-kilometer long railway tracks from Matara to Beliatta under the first phase.
The project to extend the rail line to Kataragama will be carried out in two stages. The track will be extended up to Hambantota from Beliatta under the second stage and in the last phase, it will be extended from Hambantota to Kataragama.
Under the project, four stations are to be constructed initially between Matara to Beliatta. More stations will be added depending on the public demand, Railways Department said.
