Apr 06, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Opposition and UNP Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe today criticized Speaker W.J.M Lokubandara in parliament for failing to respond to letters sent by him on the two new UNP members who were to take oaths when parliament met today.
Two new UNP parliamentarians were to be sworn in place of UNP defectors Johnston Fernando and Indika Bandaranayake.
Following an announcement by the Secretary General of Parliament, the Elections Commissioner called for the swearing in of two new UNP MPs.
However, parliament later informed the main opposition that the two new members could not be sworn in as parliament would meet on the 6th with the sole purpose of extending the Emergency Regulations.
Leader of the House, Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva said that parliament was convened today only to extend Emergency.
