Apr 06, Colombo: The two military tribunals appointed to hear the two sets of charges against the former military commander General (retd.) Sarath Fonseka are to convene today as scheduled at the Navy headquarters in Colombo.
Military Spokesperson Major General Prasad Samarasinghe said the first court martial to hear the charges against Fonseka's alleged involvement in political activities while in active service will convene at 9.30 this morning.
The second court martial, re-appointed by the President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Sunday with a new set of judges, will hear four charges of contravention of military procurement procedures by General Fonseka, at 2.30 p.m.
Earlier one set of judges had been appointed to hear the both tribunals. However, at the first sitting of the second court martial on March 17, the panel decided to adjourn the sittings over the composition of the tribunal saying it preferred to have two different panels of judges to ensure transparency in the proceedings.
The Military Spokesperson said they will convene according to the instructions of the Attorney General.
Military Spokesperson Major General Samarasinghe also disclosed that an investigation has been launched to probe the malpractices purportedly taken place in the 'Senehasa Project' that was implemented under the chairmanship of General's wife, Anoma Fonseka.
