Apr 06, Colombo: Sri Lanka's governing party Unite People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) has called on political parties not to politicize the arrest of candidates and undermine the judicial process of the country.
Government Spokesperson and Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said the recent arrest of a UNP candidate on charges of having abused a woman was in no way politically motivated though the opposition and the media are trying to portray it in such a manner.
"The kind of interpretation given by the opposition only undermines the judicial system of this country," Alahapperuma said.
He added that there were a number of UPFA members also in custody and that the party did not use these instances for political mileage.
Alahapperuma observed that the current Proportional Representation (PR) system had to be replaced with a hybrid that would include both the first-past-the-post system and the PR system.
