Sri Lanka to promote Palmyra industry in the North

Apr 05, Colombo: Sri Lankan government has taken measures to promote the Palmyra products industry in the once war-battered region of Jaffna peninsula as a part of the Uthuru Vasanthaya development program.
In an effort to improve the livelihood of the people utilizing the resources in the region, the Government is planning to grant Rs. 20 million worth of soft loan money to 20 small scale entrepreneurs.
The financial aid is intended to improve the livelihood of people in Jaffna and develop their local business, particularly the Palmyra products, Governor of the Northern Province Major General G.A. Chandrasiri said.
Under the initiative the government calls for 30 small local entrepreneurs to gather at the Jaffna Provincial Council and discuss their businesses. The business owners are to submit a report on their business and 20 of those will be selected to receive one million rupees as a loan to improve the Palmyra products.
There is an increasing demand for the Palmyra products in the local market, the Governor said.
Palmyra palm is a very useful tree as its every part can be used for variety of uses in addition to being used as a source of food. The leaves can be used for thatching, mats, baskets, fans, hats, umbrellas, and as writing material.
