Apr 05, Colombo: Sri Lanka police today detained 13 monks who are on a fast unto death in front of the Fort Railway Station in downtown Colombo, demanding the release of General Sarath Fonseka, the detained ex-military chief.
The Police spokesman Prishantha Jayakody said the police obtained a court order to remove the monks from the public place. The police said they had received complaints of inconvenience from the general public.
A group of monks affiliated to the Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) launched a fast unto death on Saturday (03) demanding the release of General Fonseka.
The group calling themselves the People's Movement for the Release of the General said they would stop their fast only when Fonseka is released by the government.
The Police intervened and dispersed the group on Saturday night but they resumed their protest yesterday.
The arrested monks will be produced in courts later today, the police spokesman said.
