Sri Lanka police all geared to face April 8 general elections

Apr 05, Colombo: Sri Lanka police is to deploy 58,700 policemen countrywide to maintain law and order during the general election. Another 19,500 military personnel will also be coordinating with the police.
The Police have also issued a warning that strict legal action would be instituted against individuals who possess illegal fire arms, especially in the last few days running up to the elections and afterwards.
Head of the Police Elections Desk DIG Gamini Navaratne has said that strict legal action will be taken against individuals who possess illegal fire arms and that the police have already commenced investigations to probe such allegations and arrest the suspects.
The Police Elections Desk, according to DIG Navaratne, has so far received 274 complaints related to election violence and 244 suspects had been arrested for violating the elections law.
"We are seeking the help of each candidate in order to arrest nearly 200 individuals who are wanted by the police for violating the elections law," he said.
The police have also deployed mobile road blocks and extra policemen to areas that have been identified as hot spots where government and the opposition have strong presence. DIG Navaratne says that such precautions would be in place prior and after the voting day.
