Asgiriya Chief Prelate urges public use their vote to change current electoral system of Sri Lanka

Apr 04, Colombo: An influential monk of Sri Lanka has urged Sri Lankan voters to use their right wisely to change the present electoral system of the country as it has led to the destruction of lives and properties over the candidates' competition to win favorite votes.
The Chief Prelate of Asgiriya Chapter, Most Venerable Udugama Sri Buddharakkhita Maha Nayake thera in a message released has said that the keenness of the candidates to win the election in the respective electorates has turned in to hatred and anger.
"Therefore, the current electoral system needs to be changed," the revered monk said.
The Chief Prelate urged the public to support the President and strengthen his government to end this system.
"His objective is to receive a two-thirds majority at the election, utilize that victory margin to formulate a constitution which suits the nation, and build a country full of optimism," the venerable monk said in his message.
The support of the Buddhist clergy and the people need to be extended to the President in this connection, he said and asked the public to use their right to vote taking into account a good future for the next generation.
The Chief Prelate urged the people of the country and the candidates who aspire to become the political representatives of the people to refrain from engaging in any form of violence.
