* Foreign poll observers commence pre-poll monitoring in Sri Lanka
Sun, Apr 4, 2010, 12:26 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 04, Colombo: Local monitoring groups in Sri Lanka said that international poll monitors have commenced their pre-poll monitoring activities for the April 8 general elections.

People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) Executive Director, Rohana Hettiarachchi told the media that 16 foreign elections observers have already commenced pre- polls monitoring in selected districts including Jaffna in the North.

The foreign monitors are to operate in eight districts.

According to PAFFREL, there have been more complaints on intra- party violence this year as opposed to the 2004 parliamentary election.

Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL) Executive Director, Somsri Han-Anuntasuk said they hope there would not be violence in the polls scheduled to be held on April 8.
