Apr 04, Colombo: Sri Lankan Police yesterday (03) night intervened and stopped the fast unto death commenced by a group of Buddhist monks opposite the Fort Railway Station in Colombo.
A group of monks from the People's Movement for the Release of General Fonseka commenced a fast unto death yesterday morning demanding the immediate release of former Army Commander Retired General Sarath Fonseka, who is currently in military custody.
The monks affiliated with the Marxist JVP yesterday said the government should not hold General Fonseka behind bars after he worked to free the country from terrorism.
However, a large number of police officers had gathered before the Fort Railway Station last night and requested the protestors to move away, as it was an unauthorized action.
The group had refused to move. A monk from the Organization said they were even ready to protest opposite Temple Trees calling for the General's release.
The police finally dismantled the stage and dispersed the crowds.
