Governing party candidate arrested in Sri Lanka over intra-party violence

Apr 03, Colombo: Sri Lanka's ruling party, United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) candidate at the April 8 general election and Councilor of the North Western Provincial Council Nishantha Perera has been remanded till April 5 for allegedly assaulting and causing injury to another UPFA member during a clash.
Perera was remanded by Chilaw Magistrate K. Sivapathiyar Sunderam when he was presented to the court by the Chilaw Police.
Perera had allegedly assaulted Deputy Minister Neomal Perera's son during a clash that had erupted between UPFA supporters of two candidates.
Meanwhile, the police last week said that the highest number of election related violence was reported from the UPFA and they were mainly intra party clashes.
