Apr 03, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Southern Hambantota Port is scheduled to commence operations by November this year.
Ports and Aviation Minister Chamal Rajapaksa said the government is now putting in place the necessary infrastructure facilities to facilitate the development in the Hambantota District.
"We are now attending to providing electricity, water and a good road network to help build and sustain the development," he said.
He observed that the government is in the process of completing the international conference center and administration complex, which is also part of the development programme.
He further explained that the development of Hambantota would develop the Southern Province on the whole benefiting the people in the South.
Minister Rajapaksa added that work on the Hambantota international airport is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year and the airport would also be in operation soon after the port commences operations.
The Hambantota became a hot topic among political circles this week when Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe claimed credit for the project.
He said the port was a plan of the UNP.
