Thu, Apr 1, 2010, 06:40 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.
Apr 01, Colombo: Sri Lanka's National Child Protection Authority has decided to introduce Child Protection Transit Villages for the benefit of the children who are in trouble due to family disputes and other problems.
The Chairman of the National Child Protection Authority Jagath Wellawaththa said he would hand over the set of proposals in this regard to the President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Under the concept of Child Protection Transit Villages, the parents who face difficulties that affect the children can temporarily seek refuge in these places. The Village Officers, the Probationary Officers, Police, and the childcare alert groups linked with the authority can direct parents to these villages.
The villages will provide welfare assistance to the needy parents for a period of one year. The parents will be given training on self-employment and industry.
Counseling and nutrition programmes too will be conducted in these villages.
The Child Protection Authority expects assistance of the Treasury and the philanthropies for this programme.
A spate of child killings by parents was reported recently in Sri Lanka and some analysts pointed to poverty and to the lack of child protection mechanisms for the pathetic situation.
