Apr 01, Colombo: Sri Lanka Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe says the majority in the next parliament following the April 8 general election would from the opposition political parties represented in the legislature.
Wickremasinghe speaking at an event held to mark the 50th anniversary of the UNP's trade union wing, the Jathika Seva Sangamaya (JSS), said the government would not be able to get a two-thirds majority in the next parliament.
He explained that even in the worst case scenario, the UNP would get about 83 seats in the parliament while the Tamil and other minority parties would get between 15-20 seats. He said the JVP would also receive a few seats.
"The opposition parties would easily get about 105 seats in parliament," the opposition leader said.
Wickremasinghe observed that given such a scenario, there was a possibility for the opposition political parties to receive about 115 seats in the 225-member parliament.
