Sri Lanka questions the timing of Miliband's statement just ahead of election

Apr 01, Colombo: Sri Lanka today questioned the timing of British Foreign Secretary David Miliband's special statement on Sri Lanka's future delivered just ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections next week.
Government Defence Spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella rejecting the Foreign Secretary's comments said Britain is apparently trying to deny the victories of the Sri Lankan government.
He said Britain is obviously biased and the timing of his statement is very suspicious.
"They have clearly planned this to suppress the victories of the government," Minister Rambukwella was quoted by Daily Mirror online.
In a special statement issued Tuesday Miliband outlined three sets of concerns under "Sri Lanka: Priorities for the future". He said he gave the same messages to the Global Tamil Forum held in London recently.
Miliband said the European Union wants to have an open and engaged trading relationship with Sri Lanka, but were forced to suspend the GSP plus concession due to the absence of key human rights conventions raised by the EU Commission.
He expressed hope that in this period the Sri Lankan Government would urgently address those issues.
Minister Rambukwella said a special government delegation will be replying to Miliband's statement shortly.
