Sept 29, Colombo: Sri Lanka has received a donation of US$5 million from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to accelerate its de-mining program in the war-torn North, the government media said today.
It said the grant was confirmed yesterday in Geneva at a meeting between the Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights, Mahinda Samarasinghe and the High Commissioner for Refugees on the sidelines of the ongoing UNHCR Executive Committee meeting,
The funds would be used to purchase 10 flailing machines to be used in the former battlefields that are heavily mined by the rebels.
Flailing machines trigger the detonation of mines using a mechanical device that simulates the human foot pressure.
Sri Lanka recently imported 10 Bosena type de-mining machines that operate automatically from Slovakia and Croatia.
Antonio Guterres, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees has reiterated the UNHCR's strong commitment to support the de-mining programme in Sri Lanka.
