Sri Lanka President and defence secretary conferred honorary doctorates

Sept 06, Colombo: The University of Colombo today conferred honorary doctorates on Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
An honorary Doctorate of Law was conferred on President Mahinda Rajapaksa, and his brother, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa was conferred an honorary Doctorate of Letters by the University of Colombo at the Postgraduate Convocation this evening, President's Media Unit said.
The University of Colombo conferred the titles on the two leaders in recognition of their services to the country in safeguarding its territorial integrity, sovereignty and defeating the LTTE by restoring peace and harmony among all Sri Lankan communities and uplifting the image of Sri Lanka within the international community, the Senate of the Colombo University stated.
The Senate of the University of Colombo resolved that the Degree of Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) be conferred on President Rajapaksa and the Degree of Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) be conferred on the Defence Secretary.
The government recently has passed legislation to control the proliferation of honorary doctorates that were being conferred by various organizations.
