Wed, Sep 2, 2009, 08:33 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Sept 02, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government has maintained a price control on several essential food items to achieve stable prices in the market, the government said today.

Minister of Trade, Marketing Development, Cooperatives, and Consumer Affairs Bandula Gunawardena addressing a media briefing today said the government has been able to provide concessions to consumers by maintaining a price control for several essential commodities.

According to the Minister, prices of essential food items including, rice, dhal and milk powder are stable in the market.

The government recently allowed the gas companies to raise the LP gas prices but according to the Minister, the price gas in Sri Lanka is low when compared to the global prices of LP gas.

Sri Lanka's Central Bank in its monthly report on consumer prices said the food prices have fell recently due to the harvest from North and East that were formerly embroiled in a decades-long war.
