Sri Lanka invites businesses to invest in the North and East

Oct 31, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government is inviting the business community to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the accelerated development programs in the war-ravaged North and East.
The government presented the projects planned for the North under the "Uthuru Wasanthaya" program and for the East under "Eastern Dawn" program to the business leaders at a seminar held at the BMICH yesterday (30).
Governor of the Northern Province, Major General G. A. Chandrasiri speaking on the 'Development in the North' said that 2,823 projects at a cost of 4.538 billion rupees have been established under the "Uthuru Wasanthaya" program in the North to facilitate the government's reconstruction and resettlement process.
According to the Governor, the main Jaffna railway line to Kankasanthurai would be reconstructed at a cost of 12.8 billion rupees. The development of roads, water supply and electricity, irrigation, education, fisheries and health and all other infrastructure facilities in the Northern Province are open to new investments.
Minister of National Integration Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan addressed the audience on the 'Present situation in the East' at the seminar highlighting that there is considerable development taking place in the East and there are still more opportunities for the private sector.
International Chamber of Commerce in Sri Lanka organized the seminar. Over 200 entrepreneurs attended the event.
