Fri, Oct 30, 2009, 08:59 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Oct 30, Colombo: The Election Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake today promised the opposition political parties to take every possible step to prevent election malpractices in future polls.

The Election Commissioner gave this assurance during a special discussion held with several opposition parliamentarians, led by the United National Party's Deputy Leader Karu Jayasooriya.

According to the sources, the opposition parliamentarians have paid attention to the need of an independent election monitoring body for the future polls.

Responding to the issue, the Election Commissioner has promised to invite foreign monitors for the upcoming two national polls.

Additionally he has assured the opposition MPs to take necessary steps over the misuse of state media during the upcoming elections.

This was the second occasion that a group of opposition parliamentarians met with the polls chief within a period of a month to discuss the future national elections.
