Policeman involved in youth's drowning in Sri Lanka capital surrenders

Oct 30, Colombo: A policeman who was wanted in connection with the alleged assault that led to the drowning of a Tamil youth in Bambalapitiya yesterday surrendered to the Bambalapitiya police, the police said.
Police spokesman Senior DIG Nimal Mediwaka said that the suspect is now in police custody after he surrendered this afternoon.
The youth, whose body was washed ashore today, was identified by his brother as Sivakumaran of Ratmalana.
According to the media reports the man was throwing stones at the trains and cars when a group of people chased him down to the beach and attacked him.
Reportedly the policeman attached to the Bambalapitiya Police was among the group of people who attacked the youth. He was not in uniform at the time, Police spokesman Senior DIG Nimal Mediwaka said
Colombo Crime Division is conducting investigations to apprehend the other culprits, the spokesman said.
A video footage of the assault, obtained by a private TV channel was aired on the TV last night.
