Sri Lanka buys more demining machines

Oct 30, Colombo: Sri Lankan Government today received another five demining machines from Slovakia to accelerate the demining efforts in the North, the authorities said.
Governor of the Northern Province, Major General G.A. Chandrasiri received the five machines at the Bandaranaike International Airport handed over them to the Minister of Nation Building, S.M. Chandrasena.
The new machines, purchased at a cost of 250 million rupees, are to be deployed by the Sri Lanka army for the demining activities in Vavuniya and Mannar districts from tomorrow.
With these five machines, a total of 19 demining machines are currently in operation to clear the Northern region of mines and unexploded ordnance to accelerate the reconstruction and resettlement efforts.
According to the government, the Security Forces have cleared an area of 59 kilo meters in the outskirts of 'Giant Tank' in 'Rice Bowl' area where the resettlement of civilians have already begun. The demining process has now advanced towards the Vedithalthive area.
The government is currently continuing the resettlement of the displaced people in the cleared areas under the 180-day "Uthuru Wasanthaya" development program.
