* Sri Lanka Navy says Indian media allegations of assault on fishermen fabricated
Thu, Oct 29, 2009, 09:06 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Oct 29, Colombo: Navy media spokesman Captain DKP Dasanayake strongly refuted the latest Indian media allegations of assault on Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy.

According to the Times Now TV report 40 fishermen from Rameswaram were beaten up and their equipment were damaged by the Sri Lankan Navy this morning.

The report said "the fishermen claim that one of their boats was completely damaged in the assault and their goods were thrown back into the sea. The fishermen after swimming in the rough seas for several hours were spotted by local fishermen on the coast and rescued."

"These allegations were fabricated and aimed at defaming the Sri Lanka Navy. I know how the Navy personnel patrol these areas and conduct themselves," the Navy spokesman said.

"These comments are baseless and I deny these allegations," he added.

Fishermen of Southern India supportive of the LTTE Tigers were known to allege the Sri Lankan Navy of assault during the conflict between the government forces and LTTE.
