Oct 28, Colombo: Adding another headache to the Sri Lankan government the employees of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) today launched a protest campaign demanding an immediate salary increment.
Over 200 union members of the CEB launched this protest campaign in front of the Ceylon Electricity Board head office in Colombo this afternoon.
During the protest campaign the Secretary of the Joint Union Forum for CEB, Ranjan Jayalal told the media they are only demanding their compulsory salary increase that is to be given every three years.
According to the CEB unions, the government has failed to provide the pay raise yet.
The unions threatened the government of an island wide strike joining with several other major sectors if the government fails to meet their demand as quickly as possible.
Meanwhile the workers' unions of the Water Board, Sri Lanka Railway Department, and Ports Authority have also threatened the government to launch an island wide strike over the same issue.
Political observers in the country say the Marxist party JVP is stirring up the union action in a futile bid to defeat President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the presidential polls.
