Resettlement of displaced civilians accelerated in Northern Sri Lanka

Oct 27, Colombo: Sri Lanka government today commenced the resettlement of thousands of displaced persons sheltered in camps in Jaffna, the Northern Province Governor's office said.
Issuing a special release this evening the Governor's office confirmed that they are conducting the resettlement process in Jaffna through small groups under the guidance of senior advisor to the President, parliamentarian Basil Rajapaksa.
According to the release there are nearly 7,000 displaced persons at the welfare camps in Jaffna. The most number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPa) are living at the Ramawil welfare camp in Kodikamam.
The NP Governor's office said 1,836 persons from Ramawil camp have been resettled in their own villages during the day today.
K. Ganesh, the Government Agent of Jaffna hopes that they could conclude the resettlement process in Jaffna within this week.
Since the October 22 resettlement in the five districts of the North has commenced and steps have been taken to resettle the IDPs of the Jaffna district. Already 33,000 IDPs living in the welfare villages of Vavuniya have been resettled in their original villages in Jaffna.
Meanwhile, Northern Province Governor Major General G.A. Chandrasiri said all resettlement activities in the Jaffna district will end soon.
Every resettled family receives an allowance of 5,000 rupees plus a savings account of 20,000 rupees. Each family has been provided dry rations sufficient for six months and will also receive seeds and fertilizer required for cultivation.
