* More trade unions in Sri Lanka threatening to strike
Sun, Oct 25, 2009, 08:50 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Oct 25, Colombo: Soon after the union workers of Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) announced their decision to call off the four-day work-rule-campaign, two other major unions in two different sectors threatened this evening to start an island wide strike.

The workers' unions of Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and Water Board have warned the government over the same demand as the CPC workers for a salary increment which they say should be provided to every three years.

Ranjan Jayalal, the convener of the Joint Union Forum for CEB told the media that they have decided to stage a massive protest campaign next Wednesday in Colombo as a pre warning of its island wide strike.

The unions of the Water Board has decided to hold its protest campaign next Tuesday in Matara, the convener of the Joint union forum for Water Board, Upali Ratnayake said.

Both unions pointed out that it would certainly be major damage to the country if these two sectors were paralyzed for several days due to their work strikes.

Political analysts say as the government is preparing to hold the presidential and parliamentary elections soon, more and more opposition-backed trade unions will launch strikes and other work stoppages to cause inconvenience to the public.
