* Over 29,000 Sri Lankans lost jobs in first quarter of the year

Oct 22, Colombo: Sri Lanka Government today said at least 29,159 persons have lost their employment during the first quarter of this year due to the global economic crisis.

Responding to a question raised by the opposition MP Lakshman Kiriella at the parliament this morning the Chief Government Whip, Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said that this figure would rise if the current global crisis widens further.

According to the Minister the government has already commenced a special program to provide them with employment opportunities with the assistance of the International Labour Organization.

"We have already proposed the International Labour Organization to enable an unemployment benefit scheme for those who lost jobs," Minister Gunawardena added.

Additionally the government is planning to introduce a special program to find employment opportunities for them under the guidance of Ministry of Labour.
