Oct 13, Paris: A group of 22 suspected LTTE activists were on trial on Monday for running an extortion racket among Paris-based Tamil expatriates to fund their separatist struggle in Sri Lanka.
The defendants, including the alleged LTTE leader in France Nadaraja Matinthiran, were accused of extorting some five million Euros (7.4 million USD) from the 75,000 Tamils living in France.
The Tamil Coordination Committee in France, believed to be a legal front for the LTTE, which has been listed as a terrorist organization by the European Union since 2006, was also on trial.
LTTE was known to impose a 'revolutionary tax' based on household size and income on the 1.5-million Tamil expatriates world wide.
