Oct 08, Colombo: Sri Lanka Parliament today passed the State of Emergency for another month with a majority of 70 votes. The bill received 82 votes for it and only 12 against it.
Tamil National Alliance parliamentarians voted against it while the main opposition United National Party abstained from voting.
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna for the second consecutive month has abstained from voting to pass the state of Emergency in parliament.
Meanwhile presenting the emergency bill to the house this morning Prime Minister Rathnasiri Wickramanayaka said though the LTTE was completely defeated by the military, Sri Lanka government could not take any risk by lifting the emergency.
According to the Premier, the government has already taken all the necessary steps to prevent the rise of another armed group in the country.
Prime Minister Wickramanayaka warned that the LTTE representatives who are living in the West are still attempting to damage the goodwill of the country.
