* Bushfires destroy 4,000 acres in Sri Lanka Hill country

Oct 08, Colombo: Nearly 4,000 acres of forest reserve at Horton Plains in Sri Lankan Hill country has been completely destroyed by the blazing bushfires.

The District Secretary of Nuwara Eliya confirmed that the bush fires which started from Ohiya area has already spread to the Horton Plains reserve few days ago.

However the Forest Department and the police had finally managed to control the fires this morning after battling the fires for six days with the assistance of the people in the area.

This forest fire was caused by the severe drought continuing in the region for several months, the District Secretary added.
