* Sri Lanka launches ad campaign to help reconstruct northern rail tracks
Thu, Oct 1, 2009, 08:01 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Oct 01, Colombo: Sri Lankan Railway Department yesterday launched an ad campaign to raise funds for the reconstruction of the destroyed northern rail tracks that carried the legendary Yal Devi train to the North.

The ad campaign for the "Uthuru Mithuru" program was launched over all telecasts in the country yesterday at the Western Province Aesthetic Resort.

The commercial invites all Sri Lankans to contribute to the national effort to reconstruct the railway track to the northern most tip of Kankasanthurai.

The Northern rail track was severely damaged by the LTTE as they have used the parts of it to build bunkers in the rebel controlled territory. As a result of this destruction the train services on Northern track were limited to Vavuniya for the last 20 years.

Sri Lanka government estimates that nearly Rs. 14 billion would cost to restore the entire rail track by 2010 under the "Uthuru Mithuru" program designed by the President, Mahinda Rajapaksa.

All owners of media institutions and other personnel who attended the event pledged their full cooperation towards this national effort.

Minister of Transport, Dullas Alahapperuma, Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna, officials of the Railway Department and artists attended the function.
