Nov 29, Colombo: A member of the main opposition United national Party who was sacked from its Working Committee this week by the Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe says he is to campaign against the retired General Sarath Fonseka's presidential bid.
Former Deputy Mayor of Colombo Azath Salley has said that the ex-Army chief has racist tendencies and the minorities will never approve Fonseka as the President, a report on the local weekly The Nation said.
"I know for sure that Tamil speaking community will not endorse the candidacy of Gen. Sarath Fonseka. Minorities will never approve of Sarath Fonseka as President and there is absolutely no chance that they will vote for him," Salley was quoted in the report.
The expelled member of the UNP has accused that the General is backed by many Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) along with European and US quarters to destabilize the country.
Salley said there was dissension in the UNP due to the party leader's decision to back General Fonseka as the common candidate and a group of disgruntled UNP members are discussing with other minority parties such as the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and Muslim parties, to gauge the possibilities of ensuring that Fonseka is not elected.
According to the Nation report UNP rebel group member Johnston Fernando and Indika Bandaranaike too will join the government as they too are against General Fonseka being appointed as the common candidate.
