* Sri Lanka's ex-military chief promises reforms if elected as President
Sun, Nov 29, 2009, 01:52 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Nov 29, Colombo: Sri Lanka's former top ranking Army leader and Presidential hopeful General Sarath Fonseka said he wants to eliminate corruption and restore democracy in the country if he was elected.

"I want to eliminate corruption, restore democratic freedom, restore law and order to ensure justice," Fonseka said at a press briefing held today to announce his presidential bid against the incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Taking a jab at the President and the Defense Secretary who is President's brother, the retired General said that the war victory is not entitled for one family. The victory should go to mainly his leadership and his troops and only a small portion of the credit goes to the political leadership.

The government stresses that although the General's contributions to the victory were important winning the war was a collective effort of everyone including the armed forces, police, the media, and even the civilians.

General Fonseka said he is not against to a war crime probe but the investigations ought to be based on clear and specific evidence and not based on mere allegations.

President Rajapaksa has vowed that he will never allow an international war crime investigation on the troops who eliminated the three-decade long LTTE terrorism from the country.

General Fonseka expressed confidence of a victory at the upcoming presidential elections scheduled to be held on January 26th.

"Yes I can, yes I will," the retired General said borrowing a line from US President Barack Obama's election speech.

He said he has picked swan as a election symbol but did not say which party he is contesting from at the polls.

General Fonseka is backed by the alliance formed by the two main opposition parties United National Party and the Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna.
