Sri Lanka appoints a committee to probe MI-24 gunship crash

Nov 29, Colombo: Sri Lanka has appointed a four-member team to investigate crash of the Air Force MI-24 helicopter gunship on last Friday afternoon that killed all the four occupants on board.
Air Force spokesman Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara said yesterday the committee headed by Air Vice Marshal Gagana Bulathsinhala visited the crash site on Friday evening.
"Investigations are continuing to ascertain the real causes behind the crash of the helicopter which was on a training mission," the spokesman said.
According to the spokesman pilots of another helicopter flying closer to the ill-fated helicopter have witnessed the crash.
The two pilots Squadron Leader Esala Dodanmaluwa and Flight Lieutenant Rehan Fernando and the two air gunners, Corporal Jayantha Sirisena and Corporal Chandrawansha Bandara Ratnayake died in the crash.
The Sri Lankan Air Force officials earlier said the crash was due to a technical failure.
Group Captain Abhaya Nanayakkara, Wing Commander Manoj Keppetipola, and Squadron Leader Malinda Perera are the other three members of the Committee.
