Nov 28, Colombo: Sri Lanka expressed its concern to the Canadian government on the arson attack of the Sri Lankan Buddhist Temple in Toronto on Friday morning.
Issuing a statement, Sri Lanka's Foreign Ministry said the High Commission conveyed the concerns of the Government of Sri Lanka to the Canadian Officials on the incident at a meeting with the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFA&IT) today.
The DFA&IT has assured that precautionary measures will be taken to protect Sri Lankan interests in Canada.
In the pre dawn hours of Friday a suspected Tamil Tiger group has set fire to the Sri Lanka Buddhist Temple Toronto Maha Viharaya at Kingston Road in Scarborough.
Toronto Fire Brigade and Police services have managed to douse the fire. No one has been injured in the fire but the Temple suffered extensive damages.
According to Chief Incumbent of the Toronto Maha Viharaya Venerable Ahangama Rathanasiri Thera, the damage is estimated at over 10,000 dollars.
According to Toronto police the fire was set deliberately using gasoline to start the fire at the back of the temple. This is the second attempt made to set ablaze the temple this year.
Investigations are being carried out by Canadian law enforcement authorities.
