The portfolio was left vacant by the resignation of Nandana Gunatilaka, the General Secretary of the breakaway Marxist party, National Freedom Front (NFF) from his party earlier this month.
Gunatilaka, the Kalutara District parliamentarian accepted the Tourism Minister portfolio in June 2009.
Secretary to the President Lalith Weerathunge was also present at the occasion.
