* I have united the nation and protected the sovereignty, Sri Lanka President says

Nov 24, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa said the people of the country gave him the responsibility to unite the nation and he has accomplished their wish defeating the deadliest extremists who were waging a war for the past three decades.

"I have been assigned by the people of this country to unite the nation, protect the sovereignty. I have accomplished that wish of the people of this nation during the past four years as the President of this country,” the President said addressing the heads of Print and Electronic media stations and institutions this morning (24) at the Temple Trees.

President Rajapaksa disclosed that the decision to hold presidential elections two years ahead of his term was to give the opportunity for the people in the North to exercise their universal right to vote in an uninfluenced mode as they have been deprived of that right before by the LTTE.

He said his greatest achievement is eliminating the terrorism from the country and following that the country has entered into a new era of development with massive projects implemented in every corner of the country.

Sri Lanka was able to minimize the global financial recession that affected many countries in the world even the ones with a stable economy due to the strong economic policies of his administration, the President pointed out.

Responding to the queries raised by journalists President Rajapaksa said the culprits responsible for the murder of t Lasantha Wickramathunga will be brought to justice once the investigations are completed.

Rejecting violence as a means to achieve the goals President said that he will not let such incidents to occur in the future.

President Rajapaksa urged the journalists to engage in their profession in a responsible manner with a more realistic approach in keeping the public of this country informed.

Ministers Dullas Alahapperuma, Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena, Senior Advisor to the President and parliamentarian Basil Rajapaksa, Secretary to the President Lalith Weerathunge, Secretary of Media Ministry W. B. Ganegala also participated in the meeting.
