Sri Lanka to commence construction of second international airport this week

Nov 23, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government is to commence construction on the second international airport at Mattala in the Hambantota District on 27 November, Ports and Aviation Ministry officials said.
The new airport will be constructed on a plot of 2,000 hectares in Hambantota district at a cost of US$200 million.
The Government of the People’s Republic of China will financially assist the project, providing a soft loan facility.
According to the Ports and Aviation Ministry, the construction of the airport will be completed in two phases.
All basic facilities including runways, taxiways and parking facilities will be completed in the first phase to be completed by 2011.
All other airport and aviation related facilities will be completed in the second phase. These include servicing and repairing centre for aircraft, hotels, pilot training centre, maintenance hub, private jet parking, and technical training centers.
The government plans to commission the airport by the end of 2011 and land the first flight by December 2011.
With the development of the Hambanthota port, fisheries harbor and other infrastructure development in the area, the construction of the airport is expected to bring in employment opportunities as well as income to the area.
